Don’t tell people how to do things, tell them what to do and let them surprise you with their results.”

Four Leadership Moves You Can Take Today

Here are four actionable bullets for leaders to hone your skills:

  1. Trust Your Team and Delegate Smartly - Start by identifying the tasks you don’t need to be doing yourself. Think of delegation as empowering your team, not just handing off busy work. Communicate expectations clearly, and then let them run with it. This frees up your time and helps build autonomy and trust, aligning perfectly with the Trust and Autonomy pillar from my leadership framework.
  2. Create Space for Innovation - If you want innovation, you have to make time for it. Set aside time for brainstorming sessions, encourage cross-functional collaboration, and make sure your team knows that creativity is encouraged. Foster a culture of Growth and Innovation by celebrating creative solutions—even the ones that don’t work out.
  3. Use Open Communication to Fuel Both - Delegation and innovation can only thrive in an environment where communication is clear and transparent. Keep everyone on the same page by clearly communicating goals, roles, and expectations. This ties into the Communication and Transparency pillar—when your team knows what’s happening and why, they’ll be more empowered to both take on responsibilities and develop fresh ideas.
  4. Hold Yourself and Your Team Accountable - Both delegation and innovation require accountability. You need to set clear goals, track progress, and make sure everyone (yourself included) follows through. Establishing strong Systems of Accountability is key to ensuring that delegation and innovation lead to real, measurable outcomes.
