Stop Poor Decisions from Draining Your Team's Morale

Stop Poor Decisions from Draining Your Team's Morale

Last week, I had two conversations about lack of trust.

Both conversations were with individuals who had left their respective companies because they were burned out. In each case, the root cause for burnout was indecision, constant changes in the target, and a loss of trust in their leadership.

Constantly changing decisions can lead to more than just frustration—it will cost your business big time. When your team is stuck in the whirlpool of shifting priorities, the result is often burnout, decreased productivity, and high turnover.

The financial impact of turnover alone can range from 50% to 200% of an employee’s annual salary, not to mention the loss of institutional knowledge and morale.

To prevent these costly outcomes, focus on building a stable environment where decisions are made with intention and consistency. Trust and autonomy empower your team to take ownership of their work, while transparent communication ensures everyone understands the “why” behind each decision.

Growth and innovation thrive in a balanced environment where decisions are steady yet adaptable.

Finally, strong accountability systems keep everyone aligned and moving in the same direction.

By integrating these principles into your leadership approach, you can create a resilient, empowered team that’s ready to weather any storm and drive your business forward.

Remember, you're not alone in this journey.

Alignment and agreement are two very different things that are separated by understanding."

TAKE ACTION: Four Things You Can Do Today

Here are four actionable bullets for leaders to hone your skills:

  1. Clarify the Decision-Making Process: Ensure that your decision-making process is transparent and well-communicated. Clearly outline the steps involved, the criteria for making decisions, and who is responsible. This clarity builds trust and helps your team feel secure in the direction the company is heading.
  2. Involve Your Team Early: Engage your team in the decision-making process from the start. By involving them in discussions and seeking their input, you not only make more informed decisions but also increase buy-in and commitment to the outcomes. This inclusiveness can significantly reduce feelings of disconnection or frustration that often lead to turnover.
  3. Consistently Communicate the ‘Why’: Whenever a decision is made, clearly communicate the reasons behind it. Help your team understand how the decision aligns with the company’s goals and values. When employees see the bigger picture, they’re more likely to stay engaged and less likely to become disillusioned or burned out.
  4. Create a Feedback Loop: Establish a system where employees can provide feedback on decisions and their implementation. Regularly review the impact of decisions and be open to adjustments. This shows that leadership values their input, which can foster a stronger sense of loyalty and reduce turnover.
