Lets talk about the F*** word
It's common to see leaders exude confidence and poise, presenting a calm front. But, like everyone else, leaders grapple with the F word - - fear.
We don't talk about fear "out in the open" because it's often rooted in a mix of personal, professional, and cultural reasons. Throughout my career, I've experienced fear firsthand and seen other leaders wrestle with it too. So, what are we really afraid of?
- Fear of Perceived Weakness - We're seen as the pillars of strength and stability, and admitting to fear might be perceived as a sign of weakness or incompetence
- Pressure to Maintain Composure - We're expected to make decisions with clarity and confidence, and discussing fears could create unnecessary concern among team members
- Impact on Career Progression - The fear of potential career consequences (including losing our job) can silence even the most reflective leaders
Leadership fears are normal, and they don't have to hold you back. By building a culture of empowerment, trust, and open communication with you team, you can turn these fears into drivers of innovation and growth.
Remember, you're not alone in this journey.
With Gratitude,
