Let's Talk About the F*** Word

Lets talk about the F*** word

It's common to see leaders exude confidence and poise, presenting a calm front. But, like everyone else, leaders grapple with the F word - - fear.

We don't talk about fear "out in the open" because it's often rooted in a mix of personal, professional, and cultural reasons. Throughout my career, I've experienced fear firsthand and seen other leaders wrestle with it too. So, what are we really afraid of?

  • Fear of Perceived Weakness - We're seen as the pillars of strength and stability, and admitting to fear might be perceived as a sign of weakness or incompetence
  • Pressure to Maintain Composure - We're expected to make decisions with clarity and confidence, and discussing fears could create unnecessary concern among team members
  • Impact on Career Progression - The fear of potential career consequences (including losing our job) can silence even the most reflective leaders

Leadership fears are normal, and they don't have to hold you back. By building a culture of empowerment, trust, and open communication with you team, you can turn these fears into drivers of innovation and growth.

Remember, you're not alone in this journey.

With Gratitude,

God put the greatest things in life on the other side of fear"
Wil Smith

Kicking Fear's A**

Here are seven things you can do now to reduce or eliminate fear:

  • Daily Mindfulness: Stay grounded for a few minutes each day by practicing mindfulness or meditation
  • Journaling: Set aside time to reflect on your leadership journey and reduce your fear of the unknown by turning vague worries into actionable insights
  • Mentorship: Find mentors who have faced similar fears and can share their experiences and advice
  • Peer Support: Connect with other peer leaders who can offer mutual support and reduce feelings of isolation
  • Stay Informed: Keep up with industry trends, new technologies, and best practices
  • Skill Development: Investing in your personal and professional development and skills will make you feel more equipped to handle challenges
  • Embrace Change: Cultivating a mindset that welcomes change as an opportunity rather than a threat reduces the fear of the unknown

Fear is a natural part of leadership, but it doesn’t have to hold you back.
